Azithromycin is usually taken once a day. It should be taken at least 1 hour before food or 2 hours after eating.

Azithromycin is an azalide that binds to 50S-ribosomal sub-unit, and avoids the translocation of peptide chains from one side of the ribosome to the other. This results in preventing the synthesis of RNA - dependent protien in sensitive organisms.

Absorption: The bioavailability of azithromycin after oral administration is approximately 37%.
Distribution: The active substance is heavily tissue bound, thus indicating higher azithromycin levels in tissue than in plasma.
Excretion: Plasma terminal elimination half-life closely reflects the tissue depletion half-life of 2 to 4 days. About 12% of an intravenously administered dose is excreted in the urine unchanged over a period of 3 days; the majority in the first 24 hours. major route of elimination of azithromycin , predominantly in unchanged form, is Biliary excretion.
